The Top 5: Best Spincast Reel 2019
Best Spincast Reel Reviews:
Pflueger President Spincast Fishing Reel
For the first entry on our best spincast reel review list, we are looking at the Pflueger President Spincast Fishing Reel. This is a good reel that is durable, well-made, but that also isn’t too costly.
As is the case when reviewing any spincast reel, the first thing that you want to look at is the frame of the reel. The frame is not only a good way to gauge the overall quality of the reel, but it also goes a long way to determining the overall reliability of the reel. So, with that being said, how is the frame on the Pflueger?
Well, the frame is extremely well-made, which is surprising because this isn’t a costly reel at all. The frame is made of very high-quality aluminum. The aluminum frame ensures that the rod is durable and will last for a long time.
It also means that the rod can stand up to some pretty heavy use. Of course, aluminum is a heavy material (especially when compared with graphite, the other material that is often used to make reel frames), but it is hard to say that this is a negative. While some may prefer lighter reels, many others prefer the heavier feel of aluminum, so we aren’t going to list the weight of the frame as a negative.
In terms of bearings, the Pflueger is in the middle of the road. With five ball bearings, it should operate relatively smoothly. However, as you will see later on in this best spincast reel review list, the top spincast rods often have eight or even nine ball bearings, which helps to ensure an even smoother casting experience. But when you consider the price of the Pflueger President Spincast Fishing Reel, it is hard to complain too much about the quality and number of ball bearings.
Other aspects of the Pflueger are surprisingly well-made. It comes with titanium pins to help keep the rod together and an instant anti-reverse system to help keep the spool and line in good order when fishing.
The only major issue with this spincast reel that we would caution you about is that it can be difficult to install on some rods. This is due to the way that the reel is designed, with minimal space between the reel cover and the mounting foot, which causes issues with some rods.
- Strong, durable aluminum frame.
- Very inexpensive.
- Good anti-reverse system.
- Durable titanium pins.
- Could use more ball bearings.
- Can be difficult to install on some rods.
Zebco ZB310BX3 Bullet Spincast Reel
Up next on our best spincast reel list, we have the first of three Zebco reels that we will be reviewing. Before starting the review, we should say that each Zebco reel deserves its own separate place on this list and that it isn’t all that shocking that it gets these many entries. After all, any experienced angler can tell you that Zebco has a really well-deserved reputation for producing quality reels.
So, now that all of that is out of the way, let’s get onto looking at why this specific Zebco spincast reel deserves to be featured on our best spincast reel list. For starters, it has a very well-made aluminum frame and cover. The Zebco ZB310BX3’s forged aluminum frame should give it a very long lifespan, even if you use it often.
The frame does come with a downside, which is weight. Now, as we mentioned in a previous review on the best spincast reel list, extra weight is a noted feature of aluminum frames and some like the extra heft, so we didn’t list it as a negative.
However, even by the standards of aluminum frames, the Zebco ZB310BX3 is heavy. You definitely want to take that into consideration before buying.
The internal aspects of the rod are as well-made as the outside. The Zebco ZB310BX3 comes with a very good anti-reverse clutch and eight high-quality ball bearings, to ensure a smooth angling experience.
If you need to change the spool in a hurry, then you will love that this Zebco spincast reel comes with a quick-change spool. You can quickly swap a spool out and put a new one in, in the event that something goes wrong. A handy feature to have in an emergency.
This is an ambidextrous reel, meaning you can change it so that the handle goes from one side to the other. This is very helpful if two people are sharing the same rod, as it lets them change the handle to fit with their preferred fishing style.
- Handle can be used on either side.
- DVery high-quality aluminum frame.
- Good ball bearings.
- Can quickly and easily change spools.
- Continuous anti-reverse system.
- Frame is very heavy, even by the standards of other aluminum frames.
Zebco Omega Pro Spincast Reel
The second Zebco spincast reel that we are reviewing is probably the overall best of the three in terms of pure quality. It has a strong claim to being the best spincast reel on this entire list for a few different reasons.
For starters, the frame on this reel is made of die-cast aluminum, which gives it nearly unparalleled durability. Likewise, the interior is made using very high-quality components. For example, it has seven stainless-steel ball bearings. Stainless-steel ball bearings are considered to be the best kind as they last the longest and they ensure the smoothest angling experience.
The reel also helps when it comes to catching tougher fish, why? Well, it has a 3.4:1 gear ratio, which means that every rotation of the handle turns the spool 3.4 times. This is relatively slow, but it does provide a lot more torque, which is helpful for handling tougher fish.
One thing that we haven’t really talked about before on the best spincast reel is grip and how important it is. It can get wet when you are fishing, either because of rain, sweat, or splashing water. Water can mess with your grip. This is why having a really good grip, like the one on the Zebco Omega, can be very important.
- Durable die-cast aluminum frame.
- Seven stainless-steel ball bearings.
- Good for reeling in tough fish.
- Very durable and long lasting.
- Can be pretty pricey, depending on the size.
Zebco ZO310BX3 Omega Z03 Spincast Reel
For the last of the three Zebco reels, we are going to be reviewing the Zebco ZO310BX3 Omega Z03 Spincast Reel. Much like the previous Zebco reel that we looked at, this is yet another very high-quality, but pricey reel.
Like all the entries on our best spincast reel review list, the Zebco boasts a really high-grade aluminum frame. We have mentioned the benefits of aluminum frames countless times before, so we won’t go into much detail.
Everything else about this reel is as good as you have come to expect from Zebco. It uses the highest quality stainless-steel ball bearings for smooth casting. It has a good, quick-change spool system, a good anti-reverse system, and much more. It is just an overall very well-made reel.
Likewise, it is also a comfortable reel to use thanks to both a very comfortable handle and an overall ergonomic design that makes the reel feel good in your hands.
- Great aluminum frame.
- High-quality ball bearings.
- Very smooth casting.
- Very ergonomically designed handle.
- Fairly expensive.
Rhino Spincast Fishing Reel
For this last entry on our best spincast reel, we want to go back to a more moderately priced option, for those of you who may want a spincast reel, but who don’t want to invest in an expensive Zebco model.
The Rhino may be moderately priced, but the quality is quite good despite the low price. It has a very sleek, durable aluminum frame. It has a very good metal covering as well. Just in general, pretty much every aspect of this spincast reel is really well-crafted and it is difficult to find any major faults.
It is also a very easy reel to use, thanks in large part to the presence of a little roller on the reel that you can use to quickly adjust the amount of drag on the line. The handle is also made out of the same high-quality aluminum as the frame. It follows-through nicely and it even has a bit of padding.
The only issue worth mentioning when it comes to the Rhino is that could use more ball bearings, as it only has four.
- Good frame.
- Reliable, comfortable handle.
- Reasonable price.
- Only four ball bearings.
Spincast Reel Buying Guide
Hopefully, you found our choice for the best spincast reel to be satisfactory. As we said way back in the introduction, this second part of our article is going to be a buying guide.
Spincast reels are designed to be used primarily by beginners (for reasons that you will see shortly) and so we figured that some sort of buying guide would be helpful. It will explain the different types of rods that are out there and some basic ways that you can evaluate a spincast reel.
The Different Types Of Rods
Now, before getting into this, we have to say that one could devote an entire book to discussing the different types of rods, so obviously this section of our best spincast reel buying guide will be a bit on the simplistic side. Still, it will provide a good starting point and overview for new anglers.
At first, it may be a bit confusing, but a spinning reel is different from a spincast reel. With a spinning reel, the spool (where the fishing line is contained) sits to the side and a bit to the front of the handle.
Think of the first image that comes to your mind when you think of a fishing rod; the chances are good that it is a spinning reel. Another key aspect of spinning reels is that the spool remains exposed and that plays a role in casting.
Spincast reels are designed to look somewhat similar to spinning reels. Much like with spinning reels, the spool on a spincast reel is parallel to and a bit in front of the handle. However, there are some key differences.
For starters, with a spincast reel, the spool is covered in a case (which can be made of plastic, aluminum, or graphite/carbon fiber). If you want to unwind the spool to cast, you simply press a button the side.
Likewise, whereas spinning reels rest under the rod, a spincast rod will be placed above the rod. Finally, spincast rods often have a very easy to use drag system. You just twist a dial on the reel to determine how much drag that you want when fishing.
Baitcasting reels are an extremely different kind of reel. Unlike the other two that we have looked at so far, baitcasting reels put the spool perpendicular to the handle.
They are extremely complex to use and so we won’t be going into too much depth. However, we will say that the one thing that they do share in coming with spincast reels is that they both go on top of the rod.
What Are Spincast Reels Good For?
So, the next question you may, especially give what we just discussed, is why you should go a spincast reel at all? Well, going with the best spincast reel can have quite a few advantages. For starters, spincast reels have a lot of little features that simply make your life a lot easier. A good example of this is the drag system that can be found on a lot of spincast reels.
You can adjust the drag of the reel by just twisting a little dial, which is really easy. Likewise, spincast reels let you just press a button to begin casting, which makes the whole experience a lot easier.
Because of how easy they are to use, spincast reels tend to be recommended for kids and beginners who aren’t familiar with the more complex reels. Similarly, they are also recommended for people who just want a casual, fun experience. Some may get enjoyment out of fiddling with more complex rods and reels, but if you don’t, then a spincast reel might be the right choice for you.
Evaluating A Spincast Reel
Obviously, if you are in a rush to find a good spincast reel (say as a gift) then you can just use the suggestions on our best spincast reel review list. However, if you want to know some of the criteria that you should be using when it comes to evaluating a spincast reel (or any kind of reel really), then this second part of the buying guide will be very useful.
If you read through our best spincast reel review list, then you no doubt picked up on how crucial the frame is. To restate what we said briefly, frames are important because they determine the weight of the reel and they also determine (at least to a certain extent) how long a particular reel will last you.
Frames can be made of two materials, aluminum and graphite (also often called carbon fiber). The two are basically the polar opposite in terms of what they bring to the table. Aluminum reels are heavier, longer lasting, and more durable. Graphite frames are lighter, less costly, but also much less durable.
All reels make use of ball bearings to keep things inside the reel from jamming, getting caught, etc. So, needless to say, good ball bearings are essential for making sure that a particular reel runs smoothly. Ideally, you want ultra-smooth stainless-steel ball bearings, as these are the most durable and they ensure the smoothest operation.
As we explained on our best spincast reel review list, different reels have different gear ratios. Gear ratios are often written in a format like 4:1. What this means is that for every single turn of the handle, the spool goes around four times.
The higher the first number, the faster the line comes back. Slower gear ratios are better for tougher fish as it is less likely to lead to your line snapping. Faster gear ratios are better for smaller or lighter fish, as you can reel them in faster and minimize the chances of them getting away.
Finally, always make sure that the reel that you buy has a good grip. You want something that is both comfortable and easy for you to hang onto in the event that your hands get wet. It isn’t major but having a good grip does come in really handy in a lot of situations.
